A.I.M.A.A HUDDERSFIELD

Master Kirkwood and Mrs Kirkwood recently visited A.I.M.A.A Huddersfield, in Yorkshire. The schools come under the direction of Mr Salik Miah, who has been part of the A.I.M.A.A family for many years.  Mr Miah has worked endlessly to build the schools up within the area of Huddersfield and now has a large group training on a weekly basis.

Supported by a strong group of Black Belts, Mr Miah has grown the group from 2 students to just over 40, which highlights his drive, determination and love for Grandmaster Cho and A.I.M.A.A.

Our visit to A.I.M.A.A Huddersfield was a wonderful trip of training and teaching, as well as socialising with the many students and Black Belts. We arrived in the area in the early hours of Saturday morning, and after some sleep and an early breakfast we where met by Mr Miah to take up to his local community centre, where all the students had gathered to train with Master Kirkwood.

The two hour session included Master Kirkwood's famous core exercises (which his own students are very familiar with!) and a warm up, followed by floor work of combinations, leg strengthening exercises and patterns! The two hours flew in and all the students enjoyed their time training with Master Kirkwood.

After the seminar it was back to the hotel for a quick rest and a bit to eat before we all headed to the local indoor bowling centre! Mr Miah and his group had organised a bowling competition, for the students and Master & Mrs Kirkwood. It was a lot of fun for everyone, young and old!  There was a prize giving at the end of the session and those who had scored the highest score in the 4 lanes we had won trophies, whilst everyone in the group received a medal! In honour of Master Kirkwood's visit the group had the trophies inscribed with "Kirkwood Bowling Competition 2010", which was very humbling for us, and very thoughtful. Master Kirkwood came home with one of these trophies as he won the top score in our lane. This trophy now sits with pride, in his study alongside the many presentations and trophies he has won over the years.

After the bowling the group said its farewells to the junior students as the adults headed to a Mongolian restaurant in Huddersfield.  It was a fantastic meal in the restaurant and an experience, as you choose your own vegetables, noodles, oils, sauces and garnishes and handed it to the chief, who then fired it into the blazing woks and cooked it in front of you! A fantastic meal in fantastic company!

Sunday training was a bit different from Saturday's as this was more aimed at the higher grades and would be covering the full A.I.M.A.A handbook! Mr Miah trains in a local scout hall and has set up a gym style matted area, where they can train everyday, if they wish! Although many of the high grades attended the Sunday training and few lower grades also attended, which they thoroughly enjoyed as they got to try out the higher grade curriculum from the handbook!

The scheduled 2 hour session quickly grew into a 4 hour session, as everyone became oblivious to the time as the went through the handbook, starting from white belt to Black Belt curriculum, one-step (1-35), and self defence! A truly hard and enthralling session of training, which everyone loved!

Our visit came to an end after the morning training session, and soon we headed for home! Master Kirkwood and Mrs Kirkwood would like to extend our utmost respect and thanks to Mr Miah, for having us down for a visit. It was a truly wonderful experience to meet everyone, and to train with them! Mr Miah works very hard with his students to instil the beliefs and the A.I.M.A.A way! A truly exceptional Instructor and person, who has inspired many in the area to join this growing group!

His Black Belts and Senior Students work tirelessly undertaking fund raising and other elements of running the schools to help their Instructor and fellow students, truly making it a A.I.M.A.A family school.  We look forward to our next trip to Huddersfield later on in the year, and the group plan a trip to Scotland to train with Master Kirkwood later on in the year, which we look forward to!
