Master Kirkwood attended the Global Taekwondo Federation Black
Belt league on Sunday the 28th of March with students from
Blantyre and Lesmahagow. This event is run annually by the
GTF and is usually closed doors, however we where invited to
participate and where honoured to do so. The GTF league is run
over 3 different leagues held in three different locations, and
is for Red to Black Belts only!
We arrived in Dundee at the local Boys Brigade hall, where
Master Kirkwood was greeted by the GTF President Mr Allan
Cunningham, and many Black Belt Instructors. After initial
introduction Master Kirkwood and Mrs Kirkwood where asked onto
the floor in front of the lined up students. At this point,
Master Kirkwood was formerly introduced to everyone and Mr
Cunningham presented Master Kirkwood a beautiful crystal
presentation on behalf of the GTF. Both Master Kirkwood and Mrs
Kirkwood did not expect this and where overwhelmed by the
generosity and kindness of the GTF and its President,
Instructors and students.
 After
this introduction it was quickly down to business and getting
the students into competition mode! The day kicked off with
sparring with Juniors taking to the floor, this was followed by
patterns, where 2 students are on the floor at one time. After
the Junior sections we moved onto the adult divisions, and some
of our Junior 17yrs where allowed to participate in the adult
sections of sparring, which was continuous sparring.
 The
league works as a way of making students better
themselves, by allowing them to try and surpass previous
results. Each league division had between 3 to 6
competitors within that division and you competed against
everyone in your league!
Overall the day was a fantastic experience for all who took part
and many new friendships where forged! The emphasis was on fun
as well as bettering your abilities!
The destruction saw students undertaking 3 disciplines, side
kick, turning kick and elbow strikes to plastic boards, if you
broke you continued on up the board widths until you could not
break anymore! The technical breaking saw high front kicks and
turning kicks with many students excelling in this discipline!
