Drinks with hidden calories
Take a look at some of the worst offenders.

As the holiday season approaches, be wary of drinking too many cocktails if you want to maintain that beach body. Long Island Iced Tea contains a whopping 780 calories alone. What makes it so fattening? Five kinds of alcohol (vodka, tequila, rum, gin, triple sec), plus a sweetened premix and cola.

And the buck doesn't stop there. Del Boy might have been a big fan of them, but you're average Pina Colada contains a belt-busting 644 calories. What makes it fattening? Rum, coconut milk and sweetened premix. You'd be better off having a Mojito for your waistline, which has a mere 160 calories by comparison.

Even a medium-sized mocha with whipped cream made with semi-skimmed milk from Caffe Nero has 326 calories. We say if you can't take your coffee black, then it's best to just add a dash of skimmed milk to keep the calories down.

It's not just alcohol which gives drinks hidden calories: cream, full-fat milk and all the trimmings can obviously play their part. Take the Starbucks white chocolate mocha with whipped cream for example: 619 calories.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, milkshakes are not going to be your best bet if a low-calorie thirst quencher is what you're after. A large McDonald's shake will add 582 calories to your daily intake. That's nearly 100 calories more than a Big Mac.

And if you like a caffeine
pick-me-up through the day, try to avoid drinks like Coke, which contains
139 calories. They're likely to give you a sugar rush which could leave you
craving more once your thirst is quenched.

Home-made lemonade may be deliciously refreshing in the summer time, but save it for special treats. Just one serving can contain 190 calories.

And sugary alcopops are best
kept to a minimum if you want to watch your waistline. Just one Bacardi
Breezer contains 198 calories.

Beer lovers beware: there are
220 calories in a pint of Stella Artois, as opposed to 170 in a pint of
Guinness.

A 250 ml serving of Vanilla Yoghurt Drink from Pret A Manger contains 230 calories, which includes 32 grams of sugars and seven grams of fat.

Innocent smoothies may also contain approximately 200 calories per bottle. But, say Innocent: "Our drinks have practically no fat. Remember each 250ml bottle contains two portions of fruit so our drinks have lots of lovely vitamins, fibre and phytonutrients."

Smoothies may be delicious - and very good for you - but it's good to keep an eye on the labels with these little bottles of goodness: Marks & Spencer's Vanilla Velvet Smoothie contains a massive 450 calories.
